Chinese Scholars to Collaborate on Archaeological Research in Fergana Region

Chinese Scholars to Collaborate on Archaeological Research in Fergana Region Fergana Regional Governor Khayrullo Bozorov met with a delegation led by Fan Wenqiang, Director of the Shaanxi Institute of Archaeology (China), to discuss prospects for collaborative research on archaeological sites in the region using modern scientific approaches. The Governor emphasized the dynamic development of bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and China, noting that cooperation between universities and research institutions is actively expanding. The partnership between Fergana State University and the Shaanxi Institute of Archaeology was highlighted as a practical outcome of these efforts, with current agreements already moving into the implementation phase. Joint projects have now begun, focusing on the exploration and museification of archaeological sites in the Fergana Valley. In the first phase, the “Shaanxi–Fergana Archaeological Research Center” and a “Laboratory for the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage” were established at Fergana State University. Additionally, an exhibition dedicated to the tomb of Yu Hong, a relic from the Sui Dynasty, has been opened. Over the next five years, collaborative research activities will continue, along with training programs for specialists in the field. During the meeting, both sides acknowledged Uzbekistan’s increased focus in recent years on exploring its rich historical legacy. They agreed on the importance of conducting extensive studies in historically significant regions like Fergana through partnerships between local and foreign scholars. In particular, plans were discussed to carry out excavations and studies at the “Kuva Shahristan” site and to develop an open-air museum at the location. “There are many archaeological monuments that still need to be studied. Through this project, we will breathe life into history and share it with the public. This is a significant endeavor, and we anticipate remarkable results,” said Governor Bozorov. He also emphasized the need to support Chinese researchers’ initiatives and proposed the development of a detailed roadmap to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the projects. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to accelerating joint activities. The Deputy Governor of the region, Sherzod Polvonov, and the Rector of Fergana State University, Bahodir Shermukhamadov, also participated in the discussions. Addition: The Shaanxi Institute of Archaeology is one of China’s leading scientific institutions located in Shaanxi Province. It plays a critical role in the study and preservation of China’s archaeological heritage. In 2024, researchers from the institute uncovered a remarkably well-preserved tomb dating back to the Ming Dynasty, further enriching China’s cultural legacy. The Institute also houses its own archaeological museum and actively participates in international research initiatives.
