Silken Harvest Begins in Fergana: Cocoon Collection Kicks Off in Yazyavan District

Farmers in Yazyavan District, Fergana region, have become among the first in the country to begin harvesting this year’s spring yield of cocoons — the prized "silver fiber." The harvest was officially launched with the participation of Fergana Region Governor Khayrullo Bozorov, who visited the district to observe the initial collection of silkworm cocoons. This year, 2,145 boxes of silkworms have been cultivated in the district, with a targeted yield of 129 tons of cocoons. To achieve this, contracts have been signed with over 900 households engaged in sericulture under internal procurement agreements. Yazyavan is home to many experienced and exemplary silkworm breeders. Among them is the family of Isroiljon Akbarov from the “Gaston” mahalla, who has been raising silkworms for over 30 years. His household cultivated four boxes of silkworms this season, and the regional cocoon harvest officially commenced from his very home. During his visit, Governor Bozorov reviewed the harvested cocoons and held a warm conversation with the family, extending best wishes for a bountiful season. The Governor also praised the household’s greenhouse farming efforts, which include the cultivation of peaches, potatoes, and peppers on their private plot. Additionally, the Governor visited the homes of leading cocoon breeders such as Azamjon Hakimov and Malohathon Yunusova. During these meetings, the economic significance of sericulture and its growing role as a source of family income were discussed. The ongoing state support for this traditional industry was also highlighted. In 2024, Fergana Region aims to produce 2,786 tons of cocoons from 46,436 boxes of silkworms. To realize this target, contracts have been signed with 4,252 farming enterprises and 13,755 home-based breeders. The industry is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 132,000 people, particularly among the rural population. It is worth noting that sericulture in Fergana has evolved into a year-round endeavor, with cocoon cultivation now practiced across four seasons annually. As harvesting intensifies in Yazyavan, similar activities are underway across other districts of the region, marking a vibrant beginning to the spring cocoon collection season.
