A Landmark 300 MW Energy Storage System Established in Fergana.
At the International Congress Center in Tashkent, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in a ceremonial event dedicated to the inauguration of new energy capacities and the commencement of construction for upcoming energy projects. As part of this event, a large-scale 300 MW energy storage system, constructed in the Uzbekistan district of the Fergana region, was officially launched. The ceremony included a live video connection to the site, where the Governor of Fergana region, Khayrullo Bozorov, representatives of foreign companies, and local elders took part in the celebrations.
This significant project was initiated during the President’s visit to the Fergana region on July 11-12, 2023. It was launched in collaboration with the Chinese company China Energy. In a remarkably short period, this unique facility, the first of its kind in Central Asia, was completed with direct foreign investment of $144 million. The project was implemented by China Gezhouba Group Overseas Investment Co., Ltd., in partnership with local collaborators. The system incorporates 193 advanced batteries, each with a capacity of 2 MW.
The Fergana energy storage system distinguishes itself through its advanced technology and innovative design. It operates by connecting to the electrical grid during periods of low energy demand, such as day and night, storing surplus electricity in a “warehouse” for later use. When demand rises, particularly during the winter months, the stored energy is released back into the grid to ensure a consistent power supply. This feature is especially valuable for maintaining balance within the energy system, as it charges the batteries during low-demand periods and discharges them during peak times, significantly enhancing grid stability.
According to calculations, with an average daily household energy consumption of 6 kWh, the energy storage system can operate twice a day and provide electricity to over 100,000 households daily. This impressive performance highlights the substantial impact of the project on the energy sector. Furthermore, the system is capable of delivering uninterrupted electricity even under challenging weather conditions, ensuring greater energy security and sustainability in the region.
